'The Maze of Sunken Liberty', 2023 (concrete, steel, found objects)

‘The Maze of Sunken Liberty’ delves into the formal and conceptual qualities of concrete structures in urban landscapes. These crumbling earth-toned concrete and steel sculptures evoke a tension and strength, appearing hostile, abandoned, and devoid of human presence. Their imperfect shapes and intriguing geometries challenge notions of perfection by subverting the intended functionality of industrial materials and offering an alternative perspective on flawed urban construction. The installation embodies urban neglect, societal control, and resistance, metaphorically representing modern failures. It prompts viewers to reflect on the overlooked imperfections in the built environment and to consider concrete’s historical associations with failed utopian promises of federal governments. A hole in the wall with a protruding scaffolding pole is attached to an interconnected network of concrete blocks and poles, surrounded by functionless structures and crumbling walls, which guide the viewer along a designated path. These inanimate objects represent social control and conformity, yet their deterioration diminishes their power, and consequently embody a defiance and a failure to control. The installation urges a reflection on our compliance to an enforced lack of mental and physical freedom in the current capitalist culture. It inherently embodies the potential for disobedience to the power structures that surround us.
