Born: 2001, London UK

Lives and works: Southampton, Hampshire

Bio

Rabia Raja is a Southampton-based sculptural artist whose work explores the built environment and urban landscapes, focusing on how city infrastructure shapes human behaviour. She specialises in industrial materials like concrete and metal, creating installations that examine brutalist architecture, urban decay, monumentality, and urban ecology. Her sculptures, characterised by geometric and abstract forms, evoke familiar yet unrecognisable structures, symbolizing the power dynamics that govern urban spaces. Through her work, Rabia reveals the often-overlooked aspects of city infrastructure and explores the complexities of social control, highlighting the human body's vulnerability to the harshness of urban environments.

Born in London, Rabia studied Art and Design for several years before completing her BA (Hons) in Fine Art at Arts University Bournemouth in 2023, specialising in 3D work. Since relocating to Southampton, she has participated in group exhibitions across multiple cities, while joining art collectives and holding creative workshops for the public. She is a member of ZEST Arts Collective, affiliated with ‘A-Space Arts’, and a resident of The Arches Studios, where she continues to develop her practice. With British-Pakistani heritage, Rabia is actively working to improve representation for female artists of colour in the art world.

Exhibitions

July 2024: ‘Co-Creating Public Space: Mela Monument’, Southampton Mela Festival, John Hansard Gallery, Group Show

As part of John Hansard Gallery’s ‘Co-Creating Public Space’ project, in partnership with Art Asia, I presented a commissioned artwork titled ‘Join’ at the Mela Festival in Hoglands Park, Southampton. Collaborating with Permindar Kaur and another artist, we led workshops with local South Asian community groups, who helped create elements of the sculpture. Some parts were intentionally left unfinished, inviting festival attendees to complete the piece through workshops, which we facilitated. The work was later exhibited at the John Hansard Gallery, accompanied by photographs documenting the artist-led workshops and the creation of the ‘Mela Sculpture Park.’

May 2024: ‘Brief Attempt’, ZEST Arts Collective, God’s House Tower, Southampton, Group Show

I exhibited my sculptural installation ‘Urban Code’ at ZEST Arts Collective’s group show at God’s House Tower. Supported by a National Lottery Project Grant from Arts Council England and ‘A Space Arts,’ the exhibition explored themes of access and time. My concrete and thermoplastic sculptures formed an installation that challenged perceptions of urban aesthetics.

April 2024: ‘Material Remains’, ZING Inclusive Group, Guildhall Square, Southampton, Group Show

I exhibited my recent work, ‘Deep Time’, with ZING Inclusive Group, an extension of ZEST Arts Collective. Emerging from a project with Southampton Cultural Services, the exhibition explored archaeological themes. Displayed in repurposed shipping containers in Guildhall Square, my rammed earth and cast aluminium sculpture, made from locally-sourced materials, delved into geological history and was reconstructed into a single form.

October 2023: ‘The Platform Graduate Award’, ASPEX Gallery, Portsmouth, Group Show

My installation, ‘The Maze of Sunken Liberty’, from my degree show, was selected for a group exhibition at ASPEX Portsmouth by Contemporary Visual Arts Network Southeast. For the Platform Graduate Award, which supports emerging graduate artists, my work was featured alongside other graduates in the group show. The award also provided mentorship from ASPEX gallery, aiding my transition into the professional art world.

August 2023: ‘Lucky Dip Bursary’, God’s House Tower, Southampton, Group Show

Through a scheme by ‘A-Space Arts’, which provided £500 to support artists in Southampton, I exhibited my installation ‘The Maze of Sunken Liberty’ at the ‘Lucky Dip’ show in God’s House Tower. The bursary funded materials for my Final Major Project, which was part of my degree show. This opportunity connected me with local artists and included critiques, tutorials, and mentorship from A-Space Arts.

June 2023: ‘BA (Hons) Fine Art Degree Show’, North Light Studios, Arts University Bournemouth

My installation, ‘The Maze of Sunken Liberty’, was featured in the BA Fine Art degree show at Arts University Bournemouth, alongside fellow graduating artists. The sculptural piece, made from concrete and steel, examined themes of flawed urban construction, the historical significance of concrete, social control, conformity, and the material’s role in brutalist architecture.

April 2023: ‘Exploring Figures in Space’, Project Room 5, Arts University Bournemouth, Group Show

My work was featured in a group show at university, curated by myself and four other students. We created a space that showcased our existing work and forged new relationships between pieces by integrating their formal elements. The exhibition presented a cohesive sculptural and painting installation, displaying our work in progress before the degree show. We collaboratively handled the curation, including arrangement, lighting, and viewer experience.

March 2023: ‘Inspirational Women Artists’, Gods’ House Tower, Southampton, Group Show/Auction

For International Women’s Day, I exhibited a print of my sculpture ‘Bust,’ my first cast concrete piece, in a group show and silent auction organized by A-Space Arts at God’s House Tower. The event featured artworks by female-identifying artists, with half of the proceeds supporting a women’s refuge charity and the other half going to the artists. This charitable exhibition was my debut in Southampton, introducing me to the local arts scene and helping me build connections with A-Space Arts and other local organizations.

December 2021: ‘Putt is it Art?’, Lower Gardens Mini Golf Course, Bournemouth, Group Show

Commissioned by Bournemouth Borough Council, I created a series of AstroTurf sculptures for an exhibition on Bournemouth Lower Gardens’ mini golf course. The group show, featuring students from Arts University Bournemouth, was curated, advertised, and hosted in collaboration with artist Douglas Fishbone. My work examined the geological impact of replacing natural grass with AstroTurf, focusing on its effects on insect life and habitat. The exhibition also included regular mentoring sessions with Douglas Fishbone.
