'Clay', SPUD Works, Sway
'‘50°53’53.3”N 1°23’36.8”W’', 2025

'‘50°53’53.3”N 1°23’36.8”W’, 2025 (clay, cast aluminium, aluminium sheet) 40cm x 40cm x 10cm (base)

My work was featured in a collaborative group exhibition at SPUD Works in Sway, alongside artists from SPUD and my fellow Arches Studio artists. Exploring the theme of clay, the exhibition was continually changing, with the show being curated in rotation.

‘50°53’53.3”N 1°23’36.8”W’ is a sculptural representation of the metal-casting process. Clay is usually a vessel for containing the desired shape of an aluminium cast, and is often discarded after the metal has been smelted and poured. In this piece, I wanted to show the remains of a cast, displaying the damage melted aluminium inflicts on clay, and what is left after this intense process.

The piece takes the form of a personal favourite footprint, located near the Arches Studios, which can be located by the coordinates in the title. Once clay was pressed into the footprint, smelted aluminium takes the positive form of the imprint. This example of ‘accidental’ urban art I stumbled across becomes an immortalised artefact, a reproduced fossil of something that would otherwise just be a footprint in the concrete pavement.
